"Aerstream technology reducing healthcare bioburden"

Atrium Innovation is developing an in situ fogging system for reducing the bio-burden in the healthcare industry.

LiquidIons delivered from Aerstream technology have been shown to be able to remove airborne contaminants, including bacteria, and to suppress new introductions of potentially harmful organisms.

By treating the air in a clean chamber before releasing bacteria, LiquidIons suppressed 70% of the bacterial challenge aerosolized into the room.

By further inclusion of well-established active ingredients in our formulations such could protect surfaces as well as treating the air.

Whereas current methods for cleaning healthcare spaces require evacuation of wards and waiting rooms, the Aerstream® spray system produces LiquidIons silently, discretely and portably while these spaces are occupied.

In trials using an optical tracer, it has been possible to visualize directly preferential treatment of handles and power switches.

Each point of deposition represents an area protected by active ingredient to prevent bio-film formation.

It is possible for the Aerstream technology to provide passive treatment of surfaces most commonly in human contact.

Atrium will continue to establish its air and surface sanitization claims using conventional active ingredients as well as innovative sanitization solutions.  The Company will test its formulation against key bacterial challenges and assess the effect on surface contamination.

Atrium will work with leading consultants to the UK National Health Service (NHS) and the Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH) at the Bradford Infection Group (University of Bradford) in order to trial bio-burden reduction. The NHS currently spends £1bn p.a. on the treatment of healthcare acquired infections in its 1,600 hospitals and clinics. In the US, the cost of bio-burden is over $5.5bn across at least 5,700 registered hospitals.

Atrium’s discrete, but effective LiquidIon dispersal system is ideally placed to provide the standard by which other technologies are measured for non-intrusive, passive protection of patients when at their most vulnerable and to provide confidence to visitors in health centres, surgeries and clinics.
