The University of Aberdeen and Rothamsted Research Ltd have identified a group of chemicals for deterring insects from biting humans. These behaviour-modifying chemicals (semiochemicals) are naturally released by human skin as part of the body’s own defence mechanism and so represent a safe and natural alternative to DEET.
People typically release chemicals attractive to insects like mosquitoes and midges, but a sub-set are naturally “unattractive” to them. They release masking chemicals, which overcome the normal attraction, effectively camouflaging them from the biting insect.
These “Angel” actives have been shown to be effective whether applied to the skin or dispersed into a room. Trials have been conducted in the laboratory and in the field in Kenya and Scotland, confirming efficacy against a range of insects from the malaria mosquito to the Scottish biting midge.
Mixtures of Angel actives have been shown to be highly effective in repelling mosquitoes (Anopheles gambiae (malaria vector) and Aedes aegypti (Dengue Fever and yellow fever vectors)) and midges (Culicoides impunctatus) (no-see-ums).
As the concentration of active ingredients increases, the amount of complete protection time increases. Angel gives 100% protection for 8 times longer than an equivalent citronella concentration.
Citronella is a popular Natural repellent. It is found in products worldwide but has a very poor lifetime and requires regular reapplication to maintain complete protection.

The market-leader DEET must be applied at high concentrations in order to achieve a long protection, but use of greater than 20% DEET is restricted . The result of these restrictions is that children may be unprotected for extensive periods of time. The concentrations of Angel actives are effective at lower concentrations than Chemical DEET based products for the same repelling effect.
Atrium’s scientists are working on various applications to spray into the air through the Aerstream technology for space and group protection and for personal protection through creams, pump sprays and other means.
